I mean, The Witcher 3 was my favorite game of 2015. It used its silver blade to defeat every opponent, and then it dragged their miserable corpses back to the village to get some money. However, it doesn’t seem like the Witcher series would work well as a board game. Who would have imagined, though, that XCOM would create a fantastic board game?

As one of the four game characters—Giralt, Triss Marigold, Dandelion, or Yarben—your objective is to explore the area and follow leads that provide you with the knowledge you need to finish quest cards and collect victory points. Every character selects tasks from a certain deck that best suit their unique set of abilities. For example, Geralt’s red deck typically has more battles and exciting adventures, whereas Dandelion is much better at talking about things—or, if you’re feeling very fancy, diplomacy.

So, the only character with the ability to draw from two decks is Yarben. When it comes to going for those greater points, there is a reward vs. risk mechanic because quests worth more points often put characters into situations for which they aren’t as skilled. Geralt is excellent at using swords to strike people in the face, but he is completely useless at diplomacy, which makes any mission requiring some tactful conversation difficult for him.
